Here's what's on and off the bookshelf this coming week.
(Also participating in Book Date Monday - so post your reading update to *inlinkz party* here and comment below with what you're reading. Note: Mostly affiliate links to Amazon below.)
On the shelf but ready to come off...
Enemy of Valor by Josh Hayes (mil-sf, 2020). This is the 3rd and final book in the Valor series, which I plan to start reading this week. Josh lives in the same town as I do and is a solid indie writer.Naked in Death by J. D. Robb (Nora Roberts) (futuristic suspense, 1995). This is the first of 50+ books in this series (which I will never finish!).
I already blogged about this one and need to get going on it! But it's a paperback and I don't read those at night. It's much easier to read e-books in bed. Finding time during the day to read is harder.
On the tablet and half-way through...
Omega Sanction by Bob Mayer (special ops thriller, 1999) This is book 4 in his Shadow Warriors series set in Bosnia during that conflict. Despite the grisly opening chapter (which you can skip), the action is tense and fast-paced.
If you like Brad Thor or Vince Flynn, then you might want to try Mayer's novels. Omega Sanction features a Green Beret (or Delta Section? I can't remember! lol) hero on a mission to uncover the abduction of teenage girls. The bad guys are selling deadly nerve gas and it's a race against time. Etc. The cyber-spying is just a tad dated (written 20+ years ago) but still pretty intriguing.
Also reading So You Need a Fake Relationship by Elizabeth Maddrey (Christian romance, 2021). This is book 5 in her Billionaire series, and yes, it's quite a departure from military SF and special ops thrillers that I normally read! But for full disclosure, Beth is my niece and I've read almost all of her 40 or so books. She has about 6 or 7 different series, many are interrelated. All contemporary Christian romance.
My favorite series of hers is Hope Ranch, but have enjoyed them all. The Billionaire set up is interesting - the owner of a huge tech firm is playing matchmaker with some key leaders in his company. Romantic interests abound.
So yes, I like romance. I've even tried my hand at the genre! I've written an Amish love story, a novella called Thee Will I Cherish (under the pen name of Joyce Daley, see book cover below). It's free on Kindle Unlimited.
But if you are a reviewer and want a complimentary ebook copy, let me know. I can also provide a discount paperback. Would love for some of you avid readers to give it a shot and let me know what you think. If you like it, I may write more Amish romance stories - always open to ideas!
Done and back on the shelf...
Mentioned in yesterday's roundup that I finished 3 books last week.
1) Perry's World by Jack C. Haldeman II (Star Trek #13, paperback, 1980, 132 pages) - Pretty good. 3 Stars.
2) Echoes of Valor by Josh Hayes (mil-sf, ebook, 2019, book 2 of his 3 book Valor series) - Really good. 4 stars.
3) So You Have My Secret Baby by Elizabeth Maddrey (Christian romance, 2021, book 4 in the 6 book series: So You Want to be a Billionaire) - Very enjoyable 4.5 stars.
Stuck on the shelf...
I still need to finish these two books that I'm sort of stuck in right now. No reason, just lost steam and need to get back to them:
Jewel in the Skull by Michael Moorcock (fantasy, 1967, paperback, 176 pages, first book in the Dorian Hawkmoon series).
Starship Gilead: Relics of Utopia by John Graves (Mil SF, 2022). An ARC I need to read and review by middle of March, I think.
That's it for Book Date Monday. Feel free to join the link party and comment below. Chat with you throughout the day and week. Happy reading.
You have some tempting books! Enjoy your week, and thanks for visiting my blog.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you! Have a great week!
DeleteI really enjoy the In Death series. I have read all of them. I'll admit it is easier to do if you start reading when the series starts, as I did. You make me want to pick up Naked In Death again and go back to the beginning. Come see my week here. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteThanks for popping by. Wow, you read a lot! Have a great week!
DeleteWhew... wish I could read that fast! Could I recommend a new book for your readers? My son's debut novel. :-). https://www.nytimes.com/2021/03/23/books/review/raft-of-stars-andrew-j-graff.html
ReplyDelete(His book is probably not your preferred genre... but it's a good one!)
DeleteI wonder if anyone has read all the books in the Naked in Death series. Wow. Fifty books. It's amazing to me that anyone has even written fifty books in a series. And I bet that author, Nora Roberts, has written a lot of series!
ReplyDeleteIt's fun that you and your niece write books. I hope to write one before I leave this earth.
Kathy Martin (who commented above) says she's read them all! Thanks for stopping by and start writing that book! Or a whole series! - Lyn
DeleteYou have quite a few interesting books. hqaven't read any of them but have read Nora Roberts. Will have to check out her Naked in Death series. Enjoy your reading this week.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by! Yes, it's amazing how different we all are when it comes to the books we read. Makes the world go round! Have a great week!
DeleteOh I still haven't read ( but want to) JD Robb!! And my Kindle is loaded with ebooks, one Ill be finishing today. I have come to love my kindle, but for me I love printed books!! Thanks so much for visiting me today!😁
ReplyDeleteI enjoy paperbacks but I have to admit I've gotten used to reading on the tablet and gauging the story's progress by that % indicator! Have a great week and thanks for stopping by. - Lyn

ReplyDeleteI think I have Beth's book Hope for Christmas on my Kindle. I just grabbed Thee Will I Cherish. Not sure when I will get to it, but if I review it, you'll see it on my blog.
ReplyDeleteHope you enjoy your reading week. Thanks for visiting my blog.
Thank you! No hurry at all. And if you have any feedback, let me know. It's my first go at an Amish story and my mother-in-law (who reads quite a bit in that genre) said I got a few things wrong! lol I like her honesty. :) Blessings and have a good week! - Lyn
DeleteIt looks like you have a busy reading week! Of course, those are the best kind of weeks!
ReplyDeleteHappy reading! - Melinda @ A Web of Stories
Thanks, you too! Appreciate you dropping by!
DeleteNice list! I need to try Robb. Have a great reading week
ReplyDeleteThanks. My niece says the first 10 or so are a bit dark and grisly and uneven, but then the series gets into a good rhythm. Have a great week!
DeleteHope you enjoy all your books. I have a hard time not finishing books too, but it has started getting easier. There are so many great books out there, no need to waste our time on books that is not keeping our attention. https://cindysbookcorner.blogspot.com/2022/02/its-monday-what-are-you-reading-6-22.html
ReplyDeleteYep agreed! Thanks for dropping in! Have a great week.
DeleteMy hubby loves Sci-fi. I think he would like The Valor series.
ReplyDeleteIt's good. Book one is very gritty - pretty strong on the ground battle scenes and language warning. Book 2 is more space battle oriented and not as action-packed imo. Starting book 3 later this week or next.
DeleteI'm glad to find another sci fi reader... as well as other genres. Looks like a good mix. I read/listened through book 16 in the In Death series.
ReplyDeleteI have been leaning heavy on sci fi and post apocalyptic over the past couple of years.
I can read print - although rare anymore - more easily than ebooks as my Kindle app takes 5 minutes to open and then freezes. Sigh.
I am trying to decide if I will listen to Edge of Valor or Eternal Frontier next for my "E" title in series.
Have a good week and Happy Reading!
Thanks for stopping by - yeah my reading tastes are all over the map, lol. As I mentioned above, the Valor books are good. Book one is very gritty, though - pretty strong on-the-ground battle scenes and language warning. Book 2 is more space battle oriented and not as action-packed imo. Starting book 3 later this week or next. I usually get audio selections from our local library, but am taking a break for a bit for some peace and quiet drive time, lol.
DeleteSo many interesting books this week - enjoy!
ReplyDeleteThanks! And thanks for popping by!
DeleteI read Naked in Death years ago and liked it well enough but the sequel never seems to be available in Overdrive.
ReplyDeleteIt's great that you support your niece's books!
Enjoy your week!
Thanks for dropping in. I get books from Libby (Overdrive) from our library as well. I can never find what I'm looking for so usually do random reads! lol
DeleteGood luck with Naked in Death! The 54th book, I think, just came out, and I found it just as enjoyable as Naked in Death, though I'm very quick to fall in love with a book :) Thanks for stopping by! Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteRead all 54? Wow! Have a great week reading and thanks for stopping in.
