Reproductive Rights
I believe in reproductive rights.
One has the right to reproduce.
So does the reproduced.
Context: Buffett to give away billions
Saw Charlie Rose last night. He was interviewing our era's philanthropic trifecta, and it was a good discussion. Especially their comments on dynastic wealth and meritocracy.
Although I don't know much about their personal lives, I am surprised and impressed with Bill and Melinda Gates and Warren Buffett as financial icons. Their dedication to causes that are "under the radar" is commendable. As is the wise and strategic manner in which they are giving away their wealth. They are demonstrating and fulfilling a sound principle of responsibility: "From everyone who has been given much, much will be demanded."
I am disappointed, however, that they have chosen to address one area of health concern from an ill-informed and mistaken perspective. While mother/infant care is of the highest priority in developing countries, the "reproductive rights" foundation to such philanthropy will only lead to the continued devaluation of humanity. Whenever the option to kill a human being is offered as a solution to a societal ill, society suffers.
Don't get me wrong.
I believe in reproductive rights.
One has the right to reproduce.
So does the reproduced.
6/28 UPDATE: Read William Buckley's column at Townhall.com, especially the comment section as people discuss the implications of this huge endowment on the family unit.
