Kansas News, National Spotlight (Issue #5)

Big Big Big News Coming out of Kansas this week...

1) Kansans gladly sing McBride's praises ~ Well, I wouldn't go that far, but evidently Country singer Martina McBride has been named Kansan of the Year by a group called The Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas. Other native nominees included Sitting Bull and Geronimo. Just kidding.

2) 'Ice Harvest' author signs books at Watermark ~ Dark and quirky movie starring John Cusack and Billy Bob Thornton is set in Wichita (but filmed in Chicago). But author and former Wichitan Scott Phillips said they didn't use his ending. "I was very pleased with the movie, including the ending," he said. "My theory is that as long as the check clears, you can do whatever you want with it."

3) Wilt the Stilt Chamberlain made his debut as a Kansas Jayhawk 50 years ago. Couldn't find the story, but I think the newswire picked it up. He was considered one of the first college basketball superstars. Read this for a great history of the Big Dipper's stay in Kansas.
